Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson was a pioneering bookbinder and printer who left an indelible mark on the Arts and Crafts movement in late 19th and early 20th century England. Born in 1840, Cobden-Sanderson initially pursued a career in law before discovering his true passion for the art of bookbinding. In 1893, he established the Doves Bindery in this very house at 15 Upper Mall, Hammersmith, where he honed his craft and elevated bookbinding to new heights of artistry.

Cobden-Sanderson’s meticulous attention to detail and commitment to using only the finest materials quickly earned him a reputation as one of the preeminent bookbinders of his time. His distinctive style, characterized by elegant simplicity and the use of high-quality leather and gold leaf, attracted the attention of discerning collectors and bibliophiles across Europe and America.

In 1900, Cobden-Sanderson expanded his artistic endeavors by founding the Doves Press, also located within this historic building. The press became renowned for its exquisite limited-edition books, which showcased Cobden-Sanderson’s design sensibilities and his collaborations with talented artists and craftsmen of the era. The Doves Press played a significant role in the revival of fine printing and typography in England, leaving a lasting impact on the world of book arts.

Cobden-Sanderson lived and worked at 15 Upper Mall until his death in 1922. The house, situated along the picturesque banks of the River Thames in the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, served as both his home and a hub of creativity for the Arts and Crafts movement.
