Marcus Garvey was a visionary black leader, philosopher, and Jamaica’s first National Hero. Born in 1887 in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, Garvey became one of the most influential figures in the Pan-Africanist movement, which sought to unify and empower people of African descent worldwide.

Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in 1914, which grew into a global organization with millions of members. He advocated for black pride, self-reliance, and the creation of independent African nations. Garvey also established the Black Star Line, a shipping company that aimed to facilitate trade and transportation between Africa and the African diaspora.

In the 1930s, Garvey moved to London, where he spent his final years. He lived and died at 53 Talgarth Road in Hammersmith and Fulham, a vibrant borough known for its diverse population and rich cultural heritage. The blue plaque commemorating Garvey’s residence was erected in 2005, acknowledging his significant contributions to the struggle for racial equality and his enduring legacy as a champion of Pan-Africanism.

Garvey’s ideas and teachings continue to inspire generations of activists and thinkers. Although he faced numerous challenges and controversies throughout his life, including a conviction for mail fraud in the United States, his unwavering commitment to the empowerment of African people has cemented his place in history as one of the most influential black leaders of the 20th century.
