Henry Labouchere (1831-1912) was a prominent British journalist and politician known for his radical views and sharp wit. Born into a wealthy family, Labouchere attended Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge before embarking on a colorful career that spanned politics, journalism, and theatre.

As a journalist, Labouchere founded the magazine “Truth” in 1877, which became renowned for its exposés of political and financial scandals. His incisive writing style and fearless reporting earned him both admirers and enemies in high places. Labouchere’s political career was equally noteworthy. He served as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Northampton from 1880 to 1906, championing various progressive causes such as women’s suffrage, Irish Home Rule, and the abolition of the House of Lords.

Labouchere lived at Pope’s Villa, 19 Cross Deep in Twickenham from 1881 to 1903. The house, now St James Independent School for Boys, was his residence during a significant period of his political and journalistic career. Twickenham, located in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, was a popular area for wealthy Londoners in the late 19th century due to its proximity to the city and attractive riverside setting.
