Sir Hamo Thornycroft (1850-1925) was a renowned British sculptor who lived and worked at 2b Melbury Road in London’s Kensington and Chelsea borough. Born into an artistic family, Thornycroft showed early promise and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He became known for his elegant, classically-inspired sculptures and public monuments.

Thornycroft’s most famous works include the statue of Oliver Cromwell outside the Palace of Westminster and the “Poet’s Fountain” memorial to Shakespeare in Park Lane. He was also commissioned to create sculptures for the facade of the Chartered Accountants’ Hall in the City of London. In 1888, Thornycroft was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy and became a full Academician in 1882.

Throughout his career, Thornycroft received many honors, including a knighthood in 1917. He lived and maintained his studio at 2b Melbury Road for many years, in the heart of London’s artistic Holland Park neighborhood. The building still stands today as a testament to Thornycroft’s legacy and the area’s rich cultural history.

Thornycroft’s artistic talents extended to his family as well. His wife, Agatha Cox, was a painter, and their daughter, Helen, became a successful sculptor in her own right. Sir Hamo Thornycroft passed away in 1925, but his contributions to British art and sculpture continue to be celebrated. This blue plaque, erected in 1957, serves as a reminder of his remarkable life and the enduring impact of his work.
