Sir Frank Short (1857-1945) was a renowned British artist who achieved great success as both an engraver and a painter. Born in Stourbridge, Worcestershire, Short showed artistic talent from a young age. He studied at the Stourbridge School of Art before moving to London to further his education at the South Kensington and Royal Academy schools.

Short became one of the foremost engravers of his time, known for his skill in mezzotint and aquatint techniques. He produced over 300 prints throughout his career, many of which were highly sought after by collectors. His engravings often depicted landscapes and seascapes, capturing the beauty of the natural world with exquisite detail and atmosphere.

In addition to his printmaking, Short was also an accomplished painter. He exhibited his watercolors and oil paintings at the Royal Academy and other prestigious galleries. His paintings, like his engravings, often featured landscapes and coastal scenes. Short’s artistic talents were widely recognized, and in 1906, he was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy. He was knighted in 1911 for his contributions to the arts.

Short lived at 56 Brook Green in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham for many years. The borough has a rich artistic heritage, with many notable writers, musicians, and visual artists having called it home over the years. Short’s presence in the area further solidified its reputation as a hub for creative individuals.

Today, Sir Frank Short is remembered as one of the greatest British printmakers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His works can be found in major museums and collections around the world, including the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The blue plaque at his former residence in Brook Green serves as a testament to his enduring legacy and the impact he made on the art world during his lifetime.
