Ernie Wise OBE 1925-1999
Ernie Wise OBE (1925-1999) was a beloved British comedian, best known as one half of the legendary comedy duo Morecambe and Wise. Together with his partner and lifelong friend Eric Morecambe, Ernie entertained millions with their witty sketches, hilarious musical numbers, and impeccable comic timing.
Born Ernest Wiseman in Leeds, Ernie began his career in show business at a young age, performing in variety shows and eventually forming a double act with Morecambe. The pair honed their craft in the halls of postwar Britain before making their television debut in 1954. Their show, “The Morecambe and Wise Show,” became a national institution, drawing in huge audiences with its mix of slapstick, wordplay, and star-studded guest appearances.
Throughout his career, Ernie’s contributions to British comedy were recognized with numerous accolades, including being appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1976. This plaque, erected at the BBC Television Centre in London where many of their shows were recorded, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Ernie Wise and the laughter he brought to generations of fans.
The borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, where the BBC Television Centre is located, has long been associated with the entertainment industry. It was home to several major television studios and production facilities, making it a hub for the creation of countless classic shows that shaped British popular culture in the 20th century.
Today, visitors to the area can still feel the echoes of that golden age of television, and this plaque honoring Ernie Wise serves as a poignant reminder of the joy and laughter that once filled these halls. It is a fitting tribute to a true icon of British comedy, whose warmth, wit, and endearing partnership with Eric Morecambe will forever be remembered by a grateful nation.
