He is best known for his groundbreaking discovery of oxygen in 1774, which revolutionized our understanding of chemistry and laid the foundation for modern science.

As a scientist, Priestley’s experiments with gases and his invention of soda water earned him great acclaim. His work earned him admission into the prestigious Royal Society in 1766. He was also awarded a doctorate of law from the University of Edinburgh in recognition of his scholarly achievements.

In addition to his scientific pursuits, Priestley was a prominent philosopher and theologian. He served as a minister at the Gravel Pit Meeting House in Hackney, London from 1793 to 1794. The meeting house, located at 7-9 Chatham Place, was a hub for religious dissenters and intellectuals of the time. Priestley’s progressive religious views and support for the French Revolution made him a controversial figure, ultimately leading to the infamous Priestley Riots in Birmingham in 1791, during which his home and laboratory were destroyed.

Despite the challenges he faced, Priestley remained a prolific writer and thinker until his death in 1804.
