Italo Svevo, born Ettore Schmitz in 1861 in Trieste, was a celebrated Italian writer best known for his modernist novels. He adopted the pseudonym “Italo Svevo” which translates to “Italian Swabian,” reflecting his mixed Italian and German heritage. Svevo’s works, written in Italian, were influential in the development of 20th-century Italian literature.

Svevo’s most famous novels include “Una Vita” (A Life), “Senilità” (As a Man Grows Older), and his masterpiece “La Coscienza di Zeno” (Zeno’s Conscience). The latter, published in 1923, is a pioneering work that employed innovative narrative techniques like stream of consciousness and unreliable narration. The novel’s protagonist, Zeno Cosini, became an iconic figure in modern literature.

From 1903 to 1913, Svevo resided at 67 Charlton Church Lane in London’s Borough of Greenwich. During this decade in England’s capital, he continued to write while also working as a correspondent for his family’s marine paint business. Svevo’s time in London exposed him to English literature, particularly the works of James Joyce, which significantly influenced his later writings.

Svevo returned to Trieste in 1913 and experienced a surge in literary recognition in the 1920s, thanks in part to the advocacy of his friend James Joyce. Sadly, Svevo’s life was cut short in 1928 when he died from injuries sustained in a car accident. However, his literary legacy endures, with his works being widely translated and studied around the world. This blue plaque, erected in 1999, commemorates Svevo’s residence in Greenwich during a formative period of his life and career.
