Reverend Philip Thomas Byard “Tubby” Clayton was a remarkable British clergyman, military chaplain, and founder of the Christian charitable organization Toc H. Born in 1885, Clayton dedicated his life to serving others and fostering fellowship among people from all walks of life.

During World War I, Clayton served as an army chaplain in Poperinge, Belgium, where he established Talbot House, a unique rest house for soldiers. Nicknamed “Toc H” (signaler’s code for TH), it provided a sanctuary where ranks were left at the door, and soldiers could find respite from the horrors of war. The spirit of camaraderie and service cultivated at Talbot House inspired Clayton to establish the Toc H movement after the war.

As the founder of Toc H, Clayton worked tirelessly to promote the organization’s mission of building a more compassionate and inclusive society. He was appointed Vicar of All Hallows-by-the-Tower in London, where he lived at 43 Trinity Square, Tower Hill. Clayton’s exceptional service and leadership were recognized with the Military Cross and his appointment as a Companion of Honour. Reverend Clayton’s legacy lives on through the continued work of Toc H and the countless lives he touched with his message of fellowship and service.
