William Richard Lethaby (1857-1931) was an influential British architect, designer, and academic who played a key role in the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He lived at 20 Calthorpe Street in Camden, London from 1880 to 1891, during an important period of his early career.

Lethaby is best known for his emphasis on integrating design and craftsmanship. He believed that architects should have hands-on knowledge of building crafts and materials. In 1896, he became the first Principal of the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, where he put his innovative ideas into practice by teaching students to appreciate the value of traditional crafts alongside their theoretical studies.

As an architect, Lethaby worked on several significant projects including the country estate of Avon Tyrrell in Hampshire and buildings for the Royal College of Science in South Kensington. He was also involved in the design of London’s famous Whitechapel Art Gallery. Lethaby’s writing on architecture and design theory, including his 1891 book Architecture, Mysticism and Myth, was highly influential.

The Borough of Camden, where Lethaby’s former residence is located, has a rich artistic and literary history. It has been home to many other notable figures such as writer Charles Dickens and poet Dylan Thomas.
