Walter Gropius was a renowned German architect and founder of the influential Bauhaus school. Born in 1883, Gropius studied architecture in Munich and Berlin before establishing his own practice. He served in World War I, after which he became director of the Grand-Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts in Weimar, Germany. It was here that Gropius transformed the school into the Bauhaus in 1919.

The Bauhaus combined crafts and fine arts, revolutionizing design education. Gropius led the school with a vision of bridging the gap between art and industry, promoting functional design and mass production. In 1925, the Bauhaus moved to Dessau, where Gropius designed the iconic school building. Political pressure from the Nazis forced the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933.

Gropius left Germany and eventually settled in England in 1934. He lived at the Lawn Road Flats in Hampstead, London, with fellow Bauhaus masters Marcel Breuer and László Moholy-Nagy. The flats, also known as the Isokon building, were a groundbreaking example of modernist architecture in Britain. During his time in England, Gropius worked on various architectural projects and taught at the Isokon Gallery. In 1937, he emigrated to the United States, where he continued his influential career at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Gropius left an indelible mark on modern architecture and design, with his pioneering ideas shaping the Built environment we experience today.
