Sir Walter Besant was a prolific English novelist and historian who lived from 1836 to 1901. He resided at 18 Frognal Gardens in Hampstead, London, where a blue plaque now commemorates his life and work. Besant was a central figure in the literary world of Victorian England, known for his social reform-minded novels that depicted the lives of ordinary people.

Besant was born in Portsmouth and educated at King’s College London and Christ’s College, Cambridge. He began his career as a professor, but soon turned to writing full-time. His early works were written in collaboration with James Rice, including the novel “Ready-Money Mortiboy” (1872) which launched their successful partnership.

After Rice’s death in 1882, Besant continued to write prolifically on his own. His solo novels like “All Sorts and Conditions of Men” (1882) and “Children of Gibeon” (1886) were noted for their vivid depictions of life in London’s East End and their calls for social reform. Besant’s interest in history also emerged in works like “London” (1892), a comprehensive survey of the city’s past. In recognition of his contributions to literature, Besant was knighted in 1895.

Beyond his writing, Besant was a leading figure in the Society of Authors, which he helped found in 1884 to protect writers’ rights and interests. He also helped establish the People’s Palace in East London, a cultural center aimed at enriching the lives of the working class. Besant lived in Hampstead, an area of North London long associated with the arts, at the pinnacle of his career until his death in 1901. His blue plaque, erected in 1925, ensures that his legacy as a novelist and social reformer lives on.
