Thomas de Quincey was an English essayist, best known for his evocative memoir “Confessions of an English Opium-Eater.” Born in 1785 in Manchester, de Quincey had a tumultuous early life marked by financial hardship and a brief period of homelessness on the streets of London. It was during this time that he first encountered opium, which would become a lifelong addiction and a central theme in his writing.

De Quincey’s literary career began in earnest with the publication of “Confessions” in 1821. The book, a harrowing account of his struggles with opium addiction, was an instant success and established de Quincey as one of the most distinctive literary voices of his generation. It was in this house at 36 Tavistock Street in London’s bustling Covent Garden district that de Quincey penned his most famous work.
