Thomas Cochrane, the 10th Earl of Dundonald, was a remarkable British naval commander and politician who lived from 1775 to 1860. Born into Scottish nobility, Cochrane joined the Royal Navy at a young age and quickly distinguished himself through his bravery and tactical brilliance. He played a significant role in the Napoleonic Wars, leading daring raids against French ships and coastal fortifications.

Cochrane’s naval exploits earned him widespread fame and the nickname “Le Loup des Mers” (The Sea Wolf) from the French. He was known for his unconventional tactics, such as flying under false colors to deceive the enemy. Despite his successes, Cochrane’s outspoken nature and political views often put him at odds with the Admiralty. In 1814, he was unjustly accused of fraud and expelled from the Royal Navy, although he was later exonerated.

In addition to his naval career, Cochrane served as a Member of Parliament for Westminster and Honiton. He was a vocal advocate for political reform and fought against corruption. After leaving the Royal Navy, Cochrane went on to command the navies of Chile, Brazil, and Greece during their respective wars of independence. His legacy as a brilliant naval strategist and a champion of justice continues to inspire to this day.

Cochrane’s later years were spent at Hanover Lodge in London’s Regent’s Park, where this blue plaque now commemorates his residence. The area, now part of the London Borough of Camden, was a fashionable retreat for the wealthy and influential during the 19th century. Cochrane’s presence here serves as a reminder of the significant figures who have called this borough home throughout history.
