Dr Robert Willan (1757-1812) was a pioneering British dermatologist who made significant contributions to the understanding and classification of skin diseases. He is considered the founder of modern dermatology and authored several influential works in the field.

Willan was born in Yorkshire and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After completing his studies, he established a successful practice in London, specializing in skin disorders. In 1798, he published his groundbreaking work, “On Cutaneous Diseases,” which introduced a new classification system for skin diseases based on their appearance and morphology. This systematic approach revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of dermatological conditions.

Throughout his career, Willan meticulously documented and described various skin diseases, including eczema, psoriasis, and impetigo. His detailed observations and illustrations laid the foundation for future dermatological research. Willan’s residence at 10 Bloomsbury Square, located in the Borough of Camden, served as both his home and a clinic where he treated patients from all walks of life. Camden, known for its rich cultural heritage and intellectual atmosphere, provided an ideal setting for Willan’s groundbreaking work.

Sadly, Willan’s life was cut short at the age of 55 due to a carriage accident. However, his legacy lives on through his contributions to dermatology. The blue plaque erected in 1949 at his former residence serves as a testament to his enduring impact on the field of medicine and his dedication to improving the lives of those suffering from skin ailments.
