Noor Inayat Khan was a war hero who served as a British Special Operations Executive (SOE) agent during World War II. Born in 1914 in Moscow to an Indian father and American mother, Khan was a direct descendant of Tipu Sultan, the famous 18th-century ruler of Mysore. The family moved to London when Khan was a child, and she later studied child psychology at the Sorbonne in Paris.

After the fall of France in 1940, Khan escaped to England and joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). Fluent in French, she was recruited by the SOE and became the first female wireless operator sent into Nazi-occupied France in 1943. With the codename “Madeleine”, Khan secretly relayed crucial intelligence back to London while constantly on the move to evade capture.

Khan’s dangerous mission ended after 3 months when she was betrayed and arrested by the Gestapo. Despite being brutally interrogated, Khan refused to reveal any information. She made two daring escape attempts before being sent to Dachau concentration camp, where she was executed at age 30. For her extraordinary bravery and sacrifice, Khan was posthumously awarded the George Cross, the highest civilian award for gallantry in the UK. This blue plaque at 4 Taviton Street in London’s Bloomsbury neighborhood marks where the courageous agent briefly stayed before embarking on her fatal mission to France.

In 2012, seven decades after her death, a bronze bust of Noor Inayat Khan was unveiled in London’s Gordon Square Gardens, the first memorial in Britain to either a Muslim or an Asian woman. Her remarkable story of heroism is a testament to the international nature of the Allied resistance, which drew in brave individuals from across the globe to fight against Nazi tyranny. Khan’s blue plaque ensures her sacrifice will never be forgotten.
