Dame Margot Fonteyn, born Margaret Evelyn Hookham in 1919, was one of the most celebrated ballerinas of the 20th century. She began dancing at a young age and joined the Vic-Wells Ballet (later The Royal Ballet) in 1934. Fonteyn quickly rose through the ranks, becoming prima ballerina in 1935 at the tender age of 16.

Throughout her illustrious career, Fonteyn captivated audiences with her graceful technique, expressive performances, and magnetic stage presence. She formed a legendary partnership with Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev, which began in 1962 and lasted until her retirement in 1979. Together, they redefined the art of ballet and brought new life to classic roles in productions such as “Romeo and Juliet,” “Swan Lake,” and “Giselle.”

Fonteyn’s achievements earned her numerous accolades, including being appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1956. She was also the first dancer to receive the prestigious title of Prima Ballerina Assoluta from The Royal Ballet in 1979. After retiring from the stage, Fonteyn continued to be involved in the dance world as a coach and mentor to young dancers. She lived in Flat 9 at 118 Long Acre, nestled in the vibrant Covent Garden area of London, until her passing in 1991. This blue plaque, erected in 2016, serves as a testament to her enduring legacy and her immense contributions to the world of ballet.
