Lytton Strachey (1880-1932) was a prominent English writer, critic and biographer who played a significant role in the influential Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals. Born to a distinguished family, Strachey is best known for his irreverent and witty biographical works that challenged the reverential tone of traditional Victorian biographies.

Strachey’s most famous book, “Eminent Victorians” (1918), offered satirical portraits of four major figures of the Victorian era: Cardinal Manning, Florence Nightingale, Thomas Arnold and General Gordon. His iconoclastic approach to biography helped to redefine the genre. He went on to write acclaimed biographies of Queen Victoria and Elizabeth and Essex.

As a core member of the Bloomsbury Group, Strachey lived at 51 Gordon Square in London’s Camden borough from 1909 to 1924. The house served as a hub for the group’s avant-garde gatherings attended by luminaries like Virginia Woolf, John Maynard Keynes and E.M. Forster. Known for his incisive wit, Strachey enlivened the intellectual discourse of his circle.
