Sir Joseph Rotblat was a remarkable Polish-born British physicist who dedicated his life to nuclear disarmament and world peace. Born in 1908 in Warsaw, Rotblat excelled in his studies and became a promising young scientist. His life took a dramatic turn during World War II when he joined the Manhattan Project, working on the development of the atomic bomb.

However, Rotblat’s conscience weighed heavily on him, and he became the only scientist to leave the project on moral grounds. From that moment on, he committed himself to preventing the use of nuclear weapons and promoting international cooperation.

In 1957, Rotblat co-founded the Pugwash Conferences, an international organization that brings together scholars and public figures to work towards reducing the danger of armed conflict. His tireless efforts in advocating for nuclear disarmament earned him numerous accolades, including a knighthood (KCMG), a CBE, and a Fellowship of the Royal Society. In 1995, Rotblat was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with the Pugwash Conferences, recognizing their crucial role in diminishing the part played by nuclear arms in international politics.

Rotblat worked at this location, 65 Great Russell Street in London’s Borough of Camden, which is now marked by a commemorative blue plaque. The borough has a rich history and is known for its vibrant cultural scene, with numerous museums, theaters, and educational institutions.

Sir Joseph Rotblat passed away in 2005 at the age of 96, leaving behind an incredible legacy as a scientist, peace activist, and humanitarian.
