Sir John Summerson (1904-1992) was a renowned British architectural historian, writer, and curator. Born in Darlington, he developed a passion for architecture early in life. Summerson studied English at University College London before embarking on a distinguished career that would establish him as one of the foremost authorities on British architecture.

Summerson’s most notable works include his 1945 book “Georgian London” and his 1953 study “Architecture in Britain: 1530-1830”, which became a seminal text in the field. He served as the curator of Sir John Soane’s Museum from 1945 to 1984, where he played a crucial role in preserving and promoting Soane’s legacy. Summerson was also a influential lecturer, holding positions at the Architectural Association School of Architecture and Birkbeck, University of London.

For his significant contributions, Summerson was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1958, knighted in 1980, and made a Companion of Honour in 1987. He lived at 1 Eton Villas in London’s Camden borough from 1949 until his death in 1992. The blue plaque commemorating his residency here was unveiled in 2012, celebrating the life of this eminent figure who shaped our understanding and appreciation of British architectural history.
