John Constable (1776-1837) was a renowned English landscape painter and member of the Royal Academy. Born in Suffolk, Constable developed a deep love for the English countryside which became the primary subject of his art. He is best known for his depictions of Dedham Vale along the River Stour, which came to be known as “Constable Country.”

Constable was a pioneer of plein air painting, often sketching outdoors to capture the changing light and atmosphere. His most famous works include “The Hay Wain” (1821), “Dedham Vale” (1802) and “Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows” (1831). Although not widely appreciated in England during his lifetime, Constable’s work found more success in France where it influenced the Barbizon school and the Impressionists.

From 1827 until his death in 1837, Constable resided at 40 Well Walk in Hampstead, London, the site of this blue plaque. Hampstead, located in the Borough of Camden, was a haven for artists and writers in the 19th century who were drawn to its rural character and stunning views over London. While living here, Constable would often take walks on the heath, finding inspiration for his art. Some of his most expressive cloud studies and Hampstead sketches were painted during this period.

Today, Constable is celebrated as one of Britain’s greatest landscape artists whose works capture the beauty and emotion of the natural world. His paintings can be viewed at galleries including the National Gallery, Tate Britain, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
