Giuseppe Mazzini was a prominent Italian activist, journalist and politician who played a pivotal role in the unification of Italy during the 19th century. Born in 1805 in Genoa, Mazzini became involved in revolutionary activities from a young age. He founded the secret society “Young Italy” in 1831, which sought to establish a unified Italian republic.

Mazzini spent much of his life in exile, including significant periods in London where he continued his political writing and organizing. It was during one of these stays that he resided at 183 Gower Street in the London Borough of Camden, as commemorated by this blue plaque. Gower Street has been home to many notable figures over the years, especially those connected to nearby University College London.

As a prolific writer, Mazzini used his pen to spread his vision of Italian nationalism and republican ideals. His tireless efforts, although often leading to failed uprisings, laid the intellectual groundwork for the eventual Risorgimento (unification) of Italy which was achieved in 1871, just a year before Mazzini’s death in 1872. Today, he is remembered as one of the key architects of modern Italy and an important figure in the history of European nationalism.

While Mazzini’s radical republicanism put him at odds with other Italian leaders like Garibaldi and Cavour who favored a monarchist approach, his legacy as an uncompromising voice for Italian unity and democracy endures. This plaque, erected in 1950, serves as a reminder of Mazzini’s time in London and the impact of his lifelong struggle for a free and unified Italy.
