George Romney was a renowned English portrait painter who lived from 1734 to 1802. He was born in Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire, and began his artistic career as an apprentice to Christopher Steele, a portrait painter based in Kendal. Romney quickly developed his skills and established himself as a talented artist in his own right.

In the 1760s, Romney moved to London to further his career and soon gained a reputation for his elegant and insightful portraits. He became a sought-after painter among the upper classes and was known for his ability to capture the likeness and personality of his subjects. Some of his most famous works include portraits of Lady Hamilton, William Beckford, and Sir William Hamilton.

Romney lived at 5 Holly Bush Hill in the Borough of Camden, London, which is now commemorated with a blue plaque. The house, situated in the picturesque Hampstead area, provided a tranquil retreat for the artist away from the bustling city center. It was here that Romney created many of his most celebrated works, cementing his status as one of the leading portrait painters of his time.

Despite his success, Romney’s personal life was marked by a tumultuous relationship with his wife, Mary, whom he had married in 1756. The couple separated in 1761, and Romney spent much of his later life living alone in London, focusing on his art. He continued to paint until his death in 1802, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional portraits that provide a glimpse into the lives and personalities of his subjects.
