George Cruikshank was a renowned British caricaturist, engraver, and illustrator who lived from 1792 to 1878. Born in London, he followed in the footsteps of his father Isaac Cruikshank, also a caricaturist and engraver. George’s satirical political cartoons and social caricatures became immensely popular, offering biting commentary on the issues of his day.

Cruikshank’s illustrations graced the works of many famous authors, including Charles Dickens. He provided the original illustrations for Dickens’ early works such as “Sketches by Boz” and “Oliver Twist.” His distinctive style, characterized by exaggerated expressions and lively scenes, perfectly captured the essence of Dickens’ characters and stories.

In addition to his collaborations with Dickens, Cruikshank produced numerous etchings, engravings, and watercolors throughout his prolific career. He was a vocal advocate for social reform, using his art to critique political corruption, poverty, and the evils of alcohol. In his later years, Cruikshank became a staunch proponent of the temperance movement, creating a series of “The Bottle” illustrations to warn against the dangers of alcoholism.

From 1850 until his death in 1878, Cruikshank resided on Hampstead Road in Camden, London. The borough of Camden, known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, was a fitting home for the influential artist. Today, a blue plaque marks the site of his former residence, commemorating his significant contributions to British art and society.
