Dr. Ernest Jones (1879-1958) was a pioneering Welsh neurologist and psychoanalyst who played a crucial role in establishing the field of psychoanalysis in Britain. Born in Gowerton, Wales, Jones studied medicine at Cardiff University and later at University College London, earning his Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS) degree.

Throughout his career, Jones became a key figure in the psychoanalytic movement. He was a close associate and biographer of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis. Jones worked tirelessly to promote Freudian ideas in the English-speaking world, founding the British Psychoanalytical Society in 1919 and serving as its president for many years.

Jones lived at 19 York Terrace East in London’s Borough of Camden from 1939 until his death in 1958. Camden has long been associated with influential figures in literature, art, and medicine. During his time here, Jones continued his psychoanalytic practice and wrote extensively on the subject, including his most famous work, the three-volume biography “The Life and Work of Sigmund Freud” (1953-1957).

As a psychoanalyst, Jones made significant contributions to the understanding of human psychology and the treatment of mental disorders. He played a key role in introducing Freudian concepts such as the Oedipus complex and the theory of symbolism to the British medical community. Jones’s legacy continues to influence the field of psychoanalysis and the wider understanding of the human mind.
