Eric Coates (1886-1957) was a renowned English composer, fondly known as the “Uncrowned King of Light Music.” Born in Nottinghamshire, Coates showed musical talent from a young age and studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He began his career as a viola player in various orchestras, including the Queen’s Hall Orchestra, where he honed his skills and gained valuable experience.

Coates’ true passion, however, lay in composition. He became famous for his light orchestral pieces, which captured the hearts of listeners with their melodic charm and easy-listening style. His most iconic work, “By the Sleepy Lagoon,” was composed in 1930 and has since become synonymous with the BBC’s “Desert Island Discs” radio program, serving as its theme tune since 1942.

From 1930 to 1939, Coates resided in Flat 176 of Chiltern Court on Baker Street in London’s Borough of Camden. This elegant art deco building, designed by the architects Claude Ferrier and T.P. Bennett, provided an inspiring backdrop for Coates’ creative endeavors. During his time here, he composed many of his most beloved works, including “London Suite” (1933) and “London Again Suite” (1936), which pay tribute to the city he called home.

Coates’ music was particularly popular during the 1930s and 1940s, offering a welcome escape during the difficult times of the Great Depression and World War II. His compositions, characterized by their memorable tunes and masterful orchestrations, continue to be performed and enjoyed by audiences worldwide. In 2013, a blue plaque was unveiled at Chiltern Court to commemorate Coates’ significant contributions to British music and his connection to this historic building in the heart of London.
