Dennis Brain 1921-1957 horn player lived here

About This Blue Plaque

Dennis Brain was a renowned British horn player who lived from 1921 to 1957. He is considered one of the greatest horn players of all time, known for his virtuosity, expressive playing, and ability to make the notoriously difficult French horn sound effortless. Brain came from a musical family – his father Aubrey Brain was also a distinguished horn player.

During his short but remarkable career, Dennis Brain was a featured soloist with many leading orchestras in Britain and abroad. He made numerous recordings that remain highly regarded today for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity. Brain expanded the horn repertoire by inspiring contemporary composers like Benjamin Britten and Paul Hindemith to write new works for the instrument.

Sadly, Dennis Brain’s life and career were cut tragically short when he died in a car accident in 1957 at the young age of 36. At the time he was living at 37 Frognal in London’s Hampstead neighborhood, as commemorated by the blue plaque erected here in 1995. Though his life ended prematurely, Brain’s legacy as an instrumentalist of unsurpassed skill and musicality lives on through his many recordings that continue to inspire horn players around the world. His untimely death was a great loss to the musical community in Britain and beyond.

Hampstead, located in north London’s Borough of Camden, has long been home to many notable figures in the arts and culture. The area’s quiet, village-like atmosphere and picturesque charm has drawn writers, painters, musicians and intellectuals since the 18th century. Other famous former residents of Hampstead range from Romantic poet John Keats to psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. The neighborhood remains one of London’s most desirable and is known for its fine historic architecture, upscale shops and restaurants, and the expansive green space of Hampstead Heath.
