He made his acting debut in 1741 in Ipswich and quickly gained acclaim for his naturalistic style, which stood in stark contrast to the more declamatory approach prevalent in that era.

Garrick’s meteoric rise culminated in him becoming the manager of the Drury Lane Theatre in London in 1747, a position he held for nearly three decades. Under his leadership, the theatre flourished, and Garrick introduced numerous innovations that shaped the future of British theatre. He championed more realistic acting techniques, commissioned new plays from leading writers like Oliver Goldsmith and Richard Brinsley Sheridan, and made significant improvements to stage lighting and set design.
