Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) was a renowned English poet, painter, and a prominent figure in the Pre-Raphaelite art movement. Born in London to an Italian émigré scholar, Gabriele Rossetti, and his wife Frances Polidori, Rossetti grew up in a creatively stimulating environment that nurtured his artistic talents from a young age.

As a painter, Rossetti co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848, along with fellow artists William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. The movement sought to revitalize British art by eschewing the academic conventions of the time and embracing a more naturalistic, detail-oriented approach inspired by medieval and early Renaissance art. Rossetti’s paintings often depicted romantic, mythological, and literary themes, with his muses and models including his wife, Elizabeth Siddal, whom he married in 1860.

Rossetti was also an accomplished poet, known for his sonnets and ballads that often explored themes of love, beauty, and spirituality. His poetry collection, “The House of Life,” is considered a masterpiece of the Victorian era. Rossetti lived at 17 Red Lion Square in Camden, London, in 1851, where he shared the residence with fellow Pre-Raphaelite luminaries William Morris and Sir Edward Burne-Jones from 1856 to 1859. This historic building, commemorated with a blue plaque erected in 1911, stands as a testament to the creative synergy and camaraderie that existed among these influential artists during a pivotal period in their lives and careers.
