Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, also known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, was a remarkable Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of the Dalits (formerly known as “untouchables”) and other socially disadvantaged classes in India. Born into a Mahar (Dalit) family in 1891, Ambedkar faced discrimination and untouchability from a young age, which fueled his determination to bring about social change.

Ambedkar’s exceptional intellect and academic prowess led him to become one of the first Dalits to obtain a college education in India. He earned doctorates in economics from both Columbia University and the London School of Economics, and gained a reputation as a scholar for his research in law, economics and political science. In 1921-1922, he lived at 10 King Henry’s Road in London’s Primrose Hill area, which is now commemorated with a blue plaque.

As a campaigner for social justice, Ambedkar played a crucial role in shaping India’s constitution and promoting the rights of the Dalits. He served as the nation’s first Law Minister and was the principal architect of the Constitution of India, which outlawed discrimination based on caste and established affirmative action measures. Ambedkar also led mass movements and converted to Buddhism along with hundreds of thousands of his followers in a rejection of Hinduism’s caste system.

Throughout his life, Ambedkar fought for women’s rights, labor rights, and the abolition of untouchability.
