Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846) was an English painter and writer who is best known for his ambitious historical paintings and portraits. Born in Plymouth, he showed early artistic talent and moved to London in 1804 to study at the Royal Academy. Haydon became a central figure in the London art world, associating with notable writers and artists of the time.

Haydon was a passionate advocate for large-scale historical paintings, believing they had the power to elevate public taste and morality. However, his outspoken views and difficult personality often led to conflicts with patrons and the Royal Academy. His most famous works include “Christ’s Entry Into Jerusalem” (1820) and “The Raising of Lazarus” (1823).

Despite some success, Haydon struggled financially throughout his career. He was imprisoned for debt and sadly took his own life in 1846. The building at 116 Lisson Grove in London’s Camden borough, where this commemorative blue plaque is located, is one of Haydon’s former residences. He shared this address with the esteemed sculptor John Charles Rossi, who created many notable public monuments and architectural sculptures in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

While Haydon’s life was marked by both triumphs and hardships, his passion for art and his influence on the British art scene of the early 19th century have secured his place in history. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by artists as they strive to leave their mark on the world.
