Benjamin Franklin was a true Renaissance man and one of the most influential figures in American history. Born in Boston in 1706, Franklin wore many hats throughout his life – he was a printer, satirist, author, scientist, inventor, statesman, and diplomat. As one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, he played a key role in shaping the nation’s early years.

Franklin’s inventions and scientific pursuits were groundbreaking. He conducted extensive research into electricity, inventing the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove. He mapped the Gulf Stream, a major current in the Atlantic Ocean. A prolific writer, Franklin penned the famous Poor Richard’s Almanack and was a newspaper editor.

In the realm of politics, Franklin was instrumental in securing French support during the American Revolution. He served as the first United States Postmaster General and was the only Founding Father to sign all four key documents establishing the U.S.: the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Alliance with France, the Treaty of Paris, and the Constitution.

Franklin resided at 36 Craven Street in London for nearly 16 years, longer than any other residence in his life. During this time in London, he served as a colonial representative for several American colonies. The house, located in the heart of Westminster, provided close proximity to the seat of government. Today, nearly 230 years after Franklin’s death, visitors can still see the Blue Plaque marking this significant chapter of an extraordinary life.
