Benjamin Disraeli, born in 1804 at 22 Theobalds Road in London’s Camden borough, was a towering figure in British politics during the Victorian era. As a statesman, novelist, and two-time Prime Minister, Disraeli left an indelible mark on the United Kingdom and its place in the world.

The son of Isaac D’Israeli, a literary critic and historian, Benjamin Disraeli initially pursued a career in law before turning to politics. He entered Parliament in 1837 as a Conservative, representing the constituency of Maidstone. Disraeli’s wit, oratorical skills, and flamboyant style quickly made him a prominent figure in the House of Commons.

Over the course of his political career, Disraeli held several key positions, including Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the Opposition. He served as Prime Minister twice, first in 1868 and again from 1874 to 1880. During his premierships, Disraeli played a crucial role in shaping Britain’s foreign policy, securing the Suez Canal and expanding the Empire. He was also instrumental in passing significant domestic reforms, such as the Reform Act of 1867, which expanded the electorate.

In recognition of his service to the nation, Queen Victoria elevated Disraeli to the peerage in 1876, making him the Earl of Beaconsfield and Viscount Hughenden. He was also made a Knight of the Order of the Garter, the highest order of knighthood in the British honours system.

Benjamin Disraeli passed away in 1881, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential and charismatic political figures in British history. The blue plaque at his birthplace in Camden, erected in 1948, serves as a testament to his enduring impact and the borough’s rich cultural heritage.
