Augustus Siebe (1788-1872) was a German-born British engineer who revolutionized underwater exploration with his groundbreaking invention of the diving helmet. Born in Saxony, Siebe moved to London in the early 19th century, where he established himself as a skilled mechanical engineer and inventor.

In 1819, Siebe founded the world’s first diving equipment manufacturing company, Siebe Gorman & Co., located at 5 Denmark Street in Camden. It was here that he developed and refined his most famous invention, the closed diving helmet, which allowed divers to work underwater for extended periods without the risk of drowning. Siebe’s diving helmet, first introduced in 1837, was a significant improvement over earlier open-helmet designs, providing a sealed environment for the diver and enabling them to breathe compressed air supplied from the surface.

Siebe’s invention quickly gained recognition and was widely adopted by the Royal Navy, as well as by civilian diving companies engaged in salvage operations, bridge construction, and underwater engineering projects. The success of his diving equipment business led to the expansion of Siebe Gorman & Co., which remained a leading manufacturer of diving gear well into the 20th century.

Today, Augustus Siebe is remembered as a pioneer in the field of diving technology, and his legacy lives on through the continued use of modern diving helmets based on his original designs. The blue plaque at 5 Denmark Street, erected in 2000 by English Heritage, commemorates the life and work of this remarkable inventor who called Camden home during his most productive years.
