Arthur Hugh Clough was a celebrated English poet of the Victorian era, known for his thought-provoking works that often grappled with questions of faith, morality, and the complexities of modern life. Born in 1819 in Liverpool, Clough was the son of James Butler Clough, a cotton merchant, and Anne Perfect. He received his education at Rugby School and later at Balliol College, Oxford, where he developed a reputation as a brilliant scholar and a free-thinking intellectual.

Clough’s poetry was marked by a unique blend of wit, irony, and deep philosophical reflection. His most famous works include “The Bothie of Tober-na-Vuolich,” a long narrative poem that explores themes of love, friendship, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world. He also wrote shorter lyric poems such as “Say Not the Struggle Nought Availeth” and “Through a Glass Darkly,” which showcase his masterful use of language and his ability to convey complex emotions and ideas.

From 1854 to 1859, Clough lived at 11 St Mark’s Crescent in the London Borough of Camden. This area of London has a rich literary history, having been home to many famous writers and artists over the years. During his time here, Clough continued to write and publish his poetry, while also working as a teacher and a civil servant. He was known for his engaging personality and his commitment to social justice, and he often used his writing to address the pressing issues of his day.

Sadly, Clough’s life was cut short by illness, and he died in 1861 at the age of 42. Despite his relatively brief career, he left behind a significant body of work that continues to inspire and challenge readers to this day. The blue plaque at 11 St Mark’s Crescent, erected in 2010, serves as a fitting tribute to this remarkable poet and thinker, whose legacy endures more than 150 years after his death.
