Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, better known by his pen name Anthony Hope, was a renowned English novelist and playwright who lived from 1863 to 1933. He is best remembered for his swashbuckling adventure novel, “The Prisoner of Zenda,” published in 1894. The book was an instant success and has since been adapted numerous times for stage, screen, and radio.

Born in Clapton, London, Hope was educated at Marlborough College and Balliol College, Oxford. He was called to the bar in 1887 but soon turned to writing as his true passion. In addition to “The Prisoner of Zenda,” Hope wrote over 30 novels, including its sequel, “Rupert of Hentzau,” and other popular works such as “The Dolly Dialogues” and “The Heart of Princess Osra.”

From 1903 to 1917, Anthony Hope resided at 41 Bedford Square in the Borough of Camden, London. This elegant Georgian townhouse, built in the late 18th century, was home to many notable figures over the years. The square itself, with its beautiful central garden, has long been associated with literary and artistic residents. During his time here, Hope continued to write prolifically, cementing his reputation as one of the leading authors of his generation.

In recognition of his literary achievements, Anthony Hope was knighted in 1918, becoming Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins. He died in 1933 at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy of entertaining and enduring works that continue to captivate readers to this day. The blue plaque at 41 Bedford Square, erected in 1976, serves as a tribute to this remarkable novelist who once called this historic corner of London his home.
