Anna Freud, born in 1895, was a pioneering psychoanalyst who made significant contributions to the understanding of child psychology. As the youngest daughter of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, Anna followed in her father’s footsteps and dedicated her life to exploring the emotional and mental development of children.

In 1938, Anna Freud moved into 20 Maresfield Gardens in London’s Camden borough, where she lived until her death in 1982. This house not only served as her home but also as the Hampstead War Nurseries during World War II, where she worked tirelessly to care for children affected by the war. Her experiences there laid the foundation for her groundbreaking work in child psychoanalysis.

Anna Freud’s most notable contribution was the development of child psychoanalytic theory and practice. She introduced the concept of defense mechanisms in children and emphasized the importance of the ego in child development. Her book “The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence” (1936) remains a seminal work in the field. Additionally, she established the Hampstead Child Therapy Course and Clinic in 1952, providing training for child therapists worldwide.

Today, 20 Maresfield Gardens serves as the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, a fitting tribute to her lifelong dedication to child mental health. The Centre continues her legacy by offering clinical services, research, and training in child psychoanalysis and mental health care.
