Alastair Sim was a beloved Scottish character actor and director best known for his comedic roles in British films. Born in 1900 in Edinburgh, Sim began his career on the stage before transitioning to film in the 1930s. One of Sim’s most iconic roles was as Ebenezer Scrooge in the 1951 adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” His portrayal of the miserly Scrooge and his transformation into a kind-hearted man has become a holiday classic. Sim’s other notable films include “Green for Danger” (1946), “The Belles of St. Trinian’s” (1954), and “The Ruling Class” (1972).

In addition to acting, Sim also directed several films, including “Laughter in Paradise” (1951) and “An Inspector Calls” (1954). He was married to actress Naomi Plaskitt from 1932 until his death in 1976. From 1953 to 1975, Sim resided at 8 Frognal Gardens in the Camden borough of London, where this blue plaque now commemorates his life and career.
