A.J.P. Taylor (1906-1990) was one of Britain’s most prominent and influential historians of the 20th century. Known for his wit, provocative views, and engaging writing style, Taylor made history accessible to a wide audience through his books, lectures, and television appearances.

Born in Birkdale, Lancashire, Taylor studied at Oxford before embarking on an academic career. He taught at Manchester University and Oxford, becoming a Fellow of Magdalen College. As a historian, Taylor specialized in modern European history, particularly the world wars and diplomatic relations. His notable works include “The Struggle for Mastery in Europe 1848-1918” (1954) and “The Origins of the Second World War” (1961), the latter generating much debate for its controversial take on appeasement policies.

Beyond academia, Taylor became a familiar face to the British public through his television lectures and appearances on current affairs programs from the 1950s to the 1980s. His broadcasts, delivered in his trademark ironical tone, made him one of the first “telly dons” – a new breed of public intellectual who could explain complex historical topics to a mass audience. Taylor lived at 13 St Mark’s Crescent in London’s leafy Primrose Hill neighborhood from 1955 until his death. The intellectual enclave of Primrose Hill, nestled in the Borough of Camden, has been home to many notable figures over the years, from poets like W.B. Yeats to philosophers like Friedrich Engels.

A.J.P. Taylor left an indelible mark on the study and public understanding of modern history. His engaging style, iconoclastic views, and mastery of the media ensured that his influence extended far beyond the academic sphere. The blue plaque at his former Primrose Hill residence, installed in 2012, serves as a tribute to one of Camden’s most distinguished residents – a man who helped shape our perception of the tumultuous 20th century.
