Margaret McMillan was a pioneering social reformer and educationalist who made significant contributions to early childhood education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1860 in New York, she moved to England with her family as a child. Along with her older sister Rachel, Margaret became deeply involved in the Fabian Society, a socialist organization that advocated for social reforms.

Recognizing the dire need for improved health and education among working-class children, Margaret and Rachel established the country’s first school clinic in Bradford in 1908. They also opened night camps for deprived children, providing them with a safe and nurturing environment. Margaret’s groundbreaking work led to the opening of the Rachel McMillan Open Air Nursery School in Deptford, London, in 1914, which served as a model for early years education.

Margaret’s innovative approach to nursery education emphasized the importance of play, fresh air, and good nutrition for young children’s development. She believed that education should focus on the whole child, including their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Her ideas and practices influenced the development of nursery schools throughout the United Kingdom and beyond.

For her tireless efforts and significant contributions to education and social reform, Margaret McMillan was appointed Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1917 and later became a Companion of Honour (CH) in 1931. Margaret and her sister Rachel lodged at 51 Tweedy Road in Bromley, where this blue plaque commemorates their lives and work. The Borough of Bromley, located in southeast London, is proud to honor these two remarkable sisters who dedicated their lives to improving the welfare and education of young children.
