John Randall Daniel “Bob” Braham was a highly distinguished Royal Air Force fighter pilot who flew during World War II. Born in 1920, Braham grew up at 139 Hendon Way in London’s Borough of Barnet. This suburban area in north London would have been a relatively quiet place for a young boy in the interwar years.

Braham went on to become one of the RAF’s most successful night fighter pilots, known for his skill and bravery in combat. He is credited with destroying 29 enemy aircraft, earning him the status of “ace”. Nineteen of these victories were achieved while flying the Bristol Beaufighter, a formidable long-range heavy fighter. Braham was awarded the Distinguished Service Order three times, as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross with two bars, in recognition of his courageous service.

Sadly, Braham’s life was cut short in 1974 at the age of just 53. However, his legacy as one of the RAF’s most renowned pilots endures. The Blue Plaque at his childhood home ensures that Braham’s connection to the Borough of Barnet, and his remarkable achievements in the defense of Britain, will always be remembered. For any aviation enthusiast or those interested in local World War II history, this memorial to a true RAF hero is well worth a respectful visit.
