Graham Hill 1929-1975 World Champion Racing Driver lived here 1960-1972
Graham Hill was a legendary British racing driver who dominated the world of motorsports in the 1960s. Born in 1929, Hill began his racing career in the early 1950s and quickly rose to prominence. He is best known for being the only driver to achieve the Triple Crown of Motorsport, winning the Indianapolis 500, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Formula One World Championship.
Hill’s crowning achievements came in the 1960s when he won the Formula One World Championship titles in 1962 and 1968, driving for BRM and Lotus respectively. His skill, determination, and charismatic personality made him a fan favorite both on and off the track. Hill was also known for his distinctive helmet design, featuring the London Rowing Club colors of white oar-blades on a dark blue background.
From 1960 to 1972, Hill resided at 32 Parkside in the Borough of Barnet, London. This northwest London borough is known for its mix of urban and suburban areas, with plenty of green spaces and a rich history dating back centuries. While living here, Hill would have been close to the iconic Wembley Stadium, which hosted many significant sporting events during his time.
Tragically, Hill died in a plane crash in 1975 at the age of 46. He was piloting his own Piper PA-23 Aztec aircraft when it crashed on a golf course in North London. Hill’s legacy lives on as one of the greatest British racing drivers of all time, and his contributions to the sport continue to inspire new generations of fans and drivers alike.
