George Frideric Handel, the renowned Baroque composer, is celebrated for his enduring masterpieces that continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Born in Halle, Germany, in 1685, Handel displayed an early aptitude for music, mastering the organ, harpsichord, and violin by the age of 10.

Handel’s musical journey led him to London in 1710, where he enjoyed the patronage of Queen Anne and later, King George I. It was during this period that he composed some of his most iconic works, including “Water Music” and “Music for the Royal Fireworks.” However, it was his association with the Duke of Chandos that brought him to Cannons, near St Lawrence Whitchurch in Edgware.

From 1717 to 1718, Handel served as the composer-in-residence at Cannons, the lavish estate of James Brydges, the 1st Duke of Chandos. During his tenure, Handel composed numerous works, including the famous “Chandos Anthems” and “Acis and Galatea,” which were performed in the baroque splendor of St Lawrence’s Church. The church, rebuilt in 1715 under the patronage of the Duke, provided a fitting backdrop for Handel’s compositions.

Handel’s legacy extends far beyond his time at Cannons. He went on to compose over 40 operas and 25 oratorios, with “Messiah” being his most famous work. Handel’s music has stood the test of time, continuing to inspire and move listeners across the globe. The London Borough of Barnet, home to St Lawrence Whitchurch and the former Cannons estate, takes pride in its association with this musical genius, whose works have left an indelible mark on the world of classical music.
