Eric Morecambe, born John Eric Bartholomew in 1926, was one half of the beloved British comedy duo Morecambe and Wise. Along with his lifelong friend and comedy partner Ernie Wise, Morecambe brought laughter and joy to millions through their television shows, stage performances, and radio programs.

Morecambe’s comedic talent shone from a young age. He began performing in music halls as a teenager and later teamed up with Ernie Wise in 1941. The duo honed their craft in variety shows and on radio before making their television debut in 1954. Their show, “The Morecambe & Wise Show,” became a national institution, attracting millions of viewers with its mix of sketches, musical numbers, and guest stars.

From 1956 to 1961, Eric Morecambe lived at 85 Torrington Park in the London Borough of Barnet. During this time, Morecambe and Wise’s popularity continued to soar, and they became household names across Britain. Morecambe’s quick wit, impeccable timing, and warm personality endeared him to audiences. In 1976, he was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to entertainment. Sadly, Morecambe passed away in 1984 at the age of 58, but his legacy lives on through the laughter he brought to so many. This blue plaque, erected in 1995, serves as a reminder of the time one of Britain’s most beloved comedians called this part of Barnet home.
